There is a system to learning plant names; and this is the key to remembering what a plant is called, and how to grow it.

For example: If a plant has a square stem, two lipped flower and oil glands, it is in the Lamiaceae family. Once we know the family, identification becomes much simpler, and remembering the name easier. Knowing a plant is in the Lamiaceae family, we also know other things about it, such as- it probably likes moist soil, and can be grown from cuttings.

This course is a natural progression from Horticulture 1, but can be taken as a subject in its own. It concentrates on the identification, care and use of plants in a systematic way.

GARDEN IRRIGATION COURSE

Learn how to design the most effective and appropriate irrigation system for the home garden, park or horticulture enterprise.

Water is essential to healthy plant growth. It is often the major limitation to a plant's productivity. Irrigation may enable plants or turf to be grown in a dry climate where it would not otherwise be possible. It may also supplement the existing rainfall and improve growth rates by extending the growth period of the plant. It may ensure that there is adequate moisture during critical periods when a plant is growing most rapidly. Irrigation at appropriate times may also improve the quality of turf or the general health of garden plants. The value of irrigation can vary greatly from year to year depending on the distribution of rainfall during the growth season.

This course covers the design, installation, maintenance, operation and evaluation of simple irrigation systems. This course is similar to BHT304 and BAG213, but focuses on irrigation for parks, home gardens, and other ornamental horticulture areas.

RHS MASTER OF HORTICULTURE BHT011 2000 hours Post Graduate level

This is a Horticultural Management oriented qualification for anyone with Diploma or higher qualifications in Horticulture or a related discipline (or equivalent).

This is considered a first degree level course in the UK. The qualification is awarded upon satisfactorily completing assessments in eight modules, which are conducted by the RHS.

NOTE: Most assessments can be undertaken from anywhere in the world; however, some of the assessments may require you to visit and undertake them in the UK before completing the
qualification. Enrolment cannot be finalised until it is approved by the RHS, as well as ACS.

Control of weeds is an important horticultural practice - it is relevant to all horticultural sectors ie: greenhouse growing, open field growing, pot culture and gardens. Weeds can seriously effect the quality or longevity of the plants you are trying to grow irrelevant of the situation.

A weed is any plant that is growing where you don't want it. A weed will compete with your desired plants for light, space, water and nutrients.

There are many different ways of controlling weeds, and literally thousands of different weed species which might need controlling. It is always important to use the appropriate treatment for the weed(s) in question. Young weeds are far easier to control than older ones. Some chemicals, for instance will effectively kill certain weeds when they are in the early stages of growth, but will not control other types of weeds. You may need to be able to distinguish between types of weeds to determine whether the chemical will or won't work.
