SET TASK - DO NOT SUBMIT

1. Look at the photographs of gardens in this lesson and on the garden website at http://www.hortcourses.com/ldscdesign/ Look for examples of: Unity, Symmetrical Balance, Asymmetrical Balance, Proportion, Harmony, Contrast and Rhythm.

2. Look through this site again and find photographs that depict different styles of garden. You should be able to find a Mediterranean garden, a formal garden, a cottage garden, a natural garden, at least.


3.Have a close look at your own property (or that of a friend's). Over the next four lessons you will be creating a new design for this area. As a starting point, think about the features you would like to retain and those that you plan to get rid of. Now think about the style of garden you would like to achieve and how the features you've decided to keep will fit in your new design. Select the features you would like to incorporate in this garden. The list below provides some ideas:

Write a brief answer to each of the following questions in your own words. Most will require no more than one paragraph.

         1)   Identify one photographs in this lesson that demonstrate each one of the following principles of design (3 photos altogether), and describe          how these effects are achieved :

    1. balance
    2. unity
    3. proportion, and.

     

    2)   Describe the main design elements and principles of formal gardens.

    3)   Match each of the following captions with appropriate photos in this lesson:

    • Natural garden
    • Symmetrical garden design
    • Informality is created by curved lines and mixed textures and/or colours
    • Contrast makes a feature stand out
    • Unity created by appropriate plant selection
    • Oriental garden

     

    4)   Describe some of the plants, hard landscaping elements (e.g. paving, fencing, walling materials) and landscaping accessories that would be appropriate to use in a courtyard garden that is used for:

     

a. entertaining

b. quiet relaxation.

Briefly explain why you chose those elements.
